Manual Lymphatic Drainage

What is it?

MLD is a hands-on technique that uses gentle, rhythmic compressions along lymphatic pathways to stimulate the flow of lymph through the body. When done correctly, it is painless, relaxing, and highly effective.

What does it do?

It can have the following beneficial effects:

  • Reduced swelling (edema)

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Reduced pain and discomfort

  • Improved circulation

  • Improved immune function

  • Relaxation

  • Improved sleep

Who can it help?

Anyone can benefit from manual lymphatic drainage—it is a great modality for general relaxation and wellness. It can be especially helpful in the following use cases:

  • Mild edema

  • Supporting recovery from an injury or surgery

  • Addiction recovery/detoxing

  • Symptom management for chronic conditions like:

    • Arthritis

    • CF/ME

    • Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

    • Fibromyalgia

    • Long Covid

    • Lupus

    • Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)

What is aftercare like?

After an MLD session, you will likely feel thirsty and need to urinate more frequently for the next day or two. This is normal, and a sign that the treatment is working as intended. All of that excess fluid needs to go somewhere!

Some people may experience other mild side effects like:

  • Soreness

  • Fatigue

  • Dizziness

Drinking plenty of water before and after a session can help prevent side effects, or make them easier to deal with.
